New labels for food products for sale in the United States
23 March 2018
Negli Usa circa il 70% degli americani è obeso o in sovrappeso.
The Centers for Disease Control report is alarming: 39.8% of adults and 20.6% of US adolescents are obese. The percentage of obesity in children between 6 and 11 years is 18.4% while between 2 and 5 years the percentage is 13.9%.
According to Dr. Frank Hu, president of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Healt, "the trend has increased, both in children and adults, despite public health efforts to improve nutrition and exercise".
Considering that the old nutritional labels (in force since 1994) do not contribute to reducing the phenomenon, the Food and Drug Administration has issued new rules for food products for sale in the United States.
It is therefore necessary to change the nutritional tables, in particular the borders, size and position of the texts, the elimination of the indication of some elements (for example calories from fat) and the insertion of new information (eg added sugars).
The deadline is set for July 26, 2019. By this date, food companies will have to adapt to the new rules by carrying out precise analyzes of the ingredients. Companies with a turnover of more than 10 million dollars, on the other hand, must be compliant by 2018.
